Most of us use the flash when we take photos in low light situations. In fact, some cameras will force you to use your flash if you don't know how to turn it off. But using your flash in well lit areas may sometimes be just what you need to make it much better. In the major light part of the day - usually from about 9 to 4, you almost always have a problem with very contrasty shadows due to lots of light that really mess up your image. Use the "Fill Flash" feature on your camera to decrease the distraction of harsh shadows. You will be surprised at how much the quality of those images will increase.

Candid shots are much more interesting than the posed "say cheese" kind. You can actually stage a candid shot, telling your models what you want them to do or how you want them to arrange themselves. The more you practice this, the more adept you will get at it. Work toward having your subjects very relaxed in the scene rather than stiff and formal. You should not be able to tell the difference between a good staged candid and a real candid shot. Many of the great candids you see by other photographers are staged, believe it or not.

This is one of the most dramatic things you can do to take better pictures of people. Often a cluttered background will totally destroy the image you thought you were getting, no matter how well you focused and composed before pressing the shutter release. You can use natural backgrounds like waterfalls as backgrounds. Just make sure you have chosen a good f-stop that will blur the background somewhat and make it less distracting. You can also move your model away from the background a good distance to reduce the details of the background and make the model a more commanding attention getter. Another way to choose your background is to make sure there are no random people walking through the photo (unless that is part of your plan). A stray person will definitely distract the viewer's attention.
